HLA typing is a kind of genetic test used to identify certain individual variations in a person's immune system.
HLA matching is used to identify which people can safely donate stem cells, an organ or bone marrow to a person who needs a transplant. If two people share the same HLA type, they are considered a ‘match’. Different diagnoses, treatments and stem cell types require different percentages of match.
Cellaviva's HLA typing involves analysing tissue samples.
The individual be typed collects a saliva sample from the inside of the cheek with a swab. The sample is analysed in a lab to find out the HLA type. Not all stem cell treatments require a match, but there are some that absolutely do. HLA typing can be done at any time in your life and you do not need to have an HLA typing to save stem cells.
