HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigens):

HLA typing is a type of genetic test used to identify certain individual variations in a person’s immune system.

It is much more complicated than blood typing. HLA matching is used to identify people who can safely donate stem cells, an organ or bone marrow to a person who needs a transplant. If two people have the same HLA type, they are considered to be “matched”. Different diagnoses, treatments and stem cell types require different levels of matching.

NIPD (abbreviation for Non-Invasive Prenatal Diagnosis), so-called non-invasive prenatal diagnosis, is a blood sample-based test that is safe and very reliable, just like NIPT Extended.

The purpose of the test is to identify inherited genetic diseases and is mainly aimed at families with a history of cystic fibrosis, Beta-thalassemia and sickle cell disease, but can be valuable for all pregnant women. Genes are analyzed from both the mother and the father to make a risk assessment of which of these genetic diseases the child may be affected by. The diseases are recessive, which means that the parents are healthy but both carry a deviant predisposition. If the child inherits two deviant predispositions, he suffers from the disease.

NIPT Extended (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing)

A blood test that can identify chromosomal abnormalities in a foetus.

NIPT Extended shows how likely it is that the foetus has certain abnormalities in the chromosomes. A screening method from week 11 of pregnancy (10+0). A venous blood sample from the mother’s arm is used to analyse the baby’s DNA. In each cell there are 46 chromosomes that contain the genetic material, DNA. Half of the chromosomes come from the egg and half from the sperm. When the cells divide after fertilisation, there can be abnormalities. Some chromosome abnormalities are very serious. Others are barely noticeable.
